The Unit of General Surgery at Kigali University Teaching Hospital provides excellent care to patient with both emergent and non emergent general surgical conditions.

Overview

The Department of Surgery at Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) provides high-quality care to patients with both emergency and non-emergency surgical conditions. The department delivers orthopedic, general, and specialized surgical services for a wide range of complex medical conditions, ensuring safe and effective treatment for all patients.

The General Surgery Unit is organized into two main teams:

1. Acute Care Surgery Team (ACS)

The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Team consists of a dedicated and highly qualified group of surgeons providing continuous care for patients with both trauma and non-trauma emergency surgical conditions. The ACS team operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Conditions managed include, but are not limited to:

  • Blunt and penetrating abdominal and thoracic injuries
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Other emergency surgical conditions

2. Elective and Oncologic Surgery Unit

This unit is managed by a team of skilled and experienced surgeons who provide care for patients with non-emergency surgical conditions, including gastrointestinal cancers.

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery
  • Urology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Orthopedics and Trauma
  • Theatre Services
  • Ambulatory Care Services
  • Ward Clerk Services

To expand access to surgical care, outreach activities are conducted in two provincial hospitals: Ruhengeri Hospital and Kibungo Hospital.

The Department of Surgery is actively engaged in clinical research aimed at improving diagnostic and treatment strategies. The department strives to provide excellent clinical care in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

Outpatient Services:
Every day from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Inpatient and Emergency Services:
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
