Pediatric Surgery is a subspecialty of surgery focused on the surgical care of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. It addresses a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions requiring specialized surgical management tailored to the needs of growing patients.

Subspecialties within Pediatric Surgery include Neonatal Surgery and Fetal Surgery. In addition, several other surgical fields provide specialized pediatric care.

Areas of Pediatric Surgical Care

  • Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery: Surgery of the heart and lungs in children, including heart and lung transplantation.
  • Pediatric Nephrological Surgery: Surgical management of kidney and ureter conditions, including renal (kidney) transplantation.
  • Pediatric Neurosurgery: Surgery of the brain, spinal cord, central nervous system, and peripheral nerves in children.
  • Pediatric Urological Surgery: Surgical treatment of the urinary bladder and related structures below the kidneys.
  • Pediatric Emergency Surgery: Management of urgent and life-threatening surgical conditions in children.
  • Fetal and Embryonic Surgery: Surgical care involving fetuses, in collaboration with obstetrics/gynecology, neonatology, and maternal-fetal medicine.
  • Adolescent and Young Adult Surgery: Surgical care adapted to the specific needs of older pediatric patients.
  • Pediatric Hepatobiliary and Gastrointestinal Surgery: Surgical treatment of liver, stomach, and intestinal diseases, including liver and intestinal transplantation in children.

  • Pediatric Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Surgical management of burns, congenital defects (such as cleft palate), and reconstructive needs.
  • Pediatric Oncological Surgery: Surgical treatment of childhood cancers.
