Patient Information

The University teaching hospital of Kigali/CHUK is the largest hospital located in District of Nyarugenge at KN 4 Ave, Kigali City. It is also the biggest referral hospital of the country with a capacity of 483 beds. CHUK provides quality healthcare to the population, training, clinical research and technical support to district hospitals.

Emergency Contacts

In case of an emergency, patients are advised to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency unit or contact CHUK emergency services. Please provide accurate personal and medical information upon arrival, including any known medical conditions, current medications, and emergency contacts, to ensure prompt and effective care.

For urgent assistance, patients and caregivers should use the designated emergency contact numbers and follow instructions provided by medical staff. Timely communication and cooperation are essential to delivering safe and efficient emergency care.

Visiting Hours

To ensure patient recovery and hospital safety, visiting hours are regulated.

General Visiting Hours:

  • Monday – Sunday: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Visitors are kindly requested to:

  • Limit visits to short durations
  • Follow infection prevention guidelines
  • Respect hospital safety policies

Special arrangements may apply for critical care and maternity units.

Patient Transfer or Referral

CHUK Outpatients’ Department runs surgical, Internal medicine, specialties clinics and Children’s specialties, this excludes nurse, technician and Allied Health Professional clinics.

The Department holds consultations of adult patients and children every year. Clinics are scheduled to run from 8.00am to 5pm, Monday to Friday weekly, with morning & afternoon sessions.

The Hospital only accepts GP referrals, by hand to our Out Patients Department. Please note the Hospital no longer accepts referrals by fax.

Accessing our outpatient clinics

To obtain an appointment within the CHUK Outpatient Service, a patient must first have a referral from one of the following sources of referral.

• General Practitioner (GP) of District Hospital
• Emergency Department
• Consultant to consultant
• Inpatient referrals originating from an admission
• Other Hospitals or Health Centres

 

How are referrals submitted?

GP Referrals from Other Hospitals or Health Centres can be submitted to the OPD department in person.
By Hand: At the CHUK Outpatient reception desks in the different OutPatient units of CHUK.

What happens after we receive the referral?

The referral is assessed by the consultant team and issued with a priority, this is based on clinical need. An appointment date is issued based on this priority. Note that waiting times vary depending on the specialty.

If referral is urgent priority:
The Patient is added to an urgent Outpatient waiting list and an appointment will be offered in chronological order. Please be aware that different specialties have different waiting times for their waiting lists.

If referral is routine priority:
Patient is added to a routine waiting list and will be notified of the routine priority. Confirmed appointment dates are issued one to eight weeks before the confirmed date. Please be aware that different specialties have different waiting times for their waiting lists.

Billing & Insurance

The hospital accepts recognized health insurance schemes and approved payment methods.

Accepted Insurance:

  • Community-Based Health Insurance (Mutuelle de SantĂ©)
  • RSSB
  • Other approved insurers

Patients are advised to verify coverage details before receiving services. For uninsured services, payment must be completed at the billing office.

Restaurant & Facilities

Restaurant & Sandwich bar or Kiosk (Coffee, juice, snacks etc..)
There is an accessible restaurant located in the CHUK compound which offers a varied menu of food and beverage with a reasonable and flexible price schedule.
Restaurant opening Times: It works all days and nights from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm (22:00 pm).

Sandwich bar or Kiosk opening Times: It works all days and nights from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm (20:00 pm), Saturday and Sunday included.

Pharmacy

There is a pharmacy shop located in the middle of the CHUK. All the OPD and Inpatient medical prescription notes are received at this pharmacy. This is managed by the hospital

Different chapels celebrate their days of prayers on:

Catholics:

  Wednesday from 12:15 pm – 13:00 pm
  Friday from 12:15 pm – 13:00 pm
  Sunday from 12:00 pm – 13:00 pm

Protestant:

  Monday – Friday from 12:00 pm – 13:00 pm
  Sunday from 8:30 am- 12:00 pm
