Overview

The Nephrology Unit at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney-related diseases and disorders. The unit is dedicated to delivering high-quality patient-centered care, promoting prevention and early detection of kidney disease, advancing medical research, and training healthcare professionals.

Our multidisciplinary team manages both acute and chronic kidney conditions using modern diagnostic and treatment approaches to ensure effective and safe patient care.

Clinical Services

The Nephrology Unit provides diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for:

  • Acute kidney injury
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • End-stage renal disease
  • Hypertension related to kidney disease
  • Glomerular diseases
  • Electrolyte and fluid balance disorders
  • Kidney infections
  • Diabetic kidney disease
  • Autoimmune kidney disorders

The unit also provides hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services for patients requiring renal replacement therapy, as well as pre- and post-kidney transplant care in collaboration with specialized centers.

Training and Research

The Nephrology Unit plays an active role in the training of medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals. The department is also involved in clinical research aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases.

Working Hours

Outpatient Services: As scheduled by appointment

Inpatient and Emergency Services: Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
