The Neurosurgery Unit at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) provides specialized care for patients with disorders affecting the brain, spine, and nervous system. The unit is dedicated to delivering high-quality surgical care, advancing medical knowledge through research, and training future healthcare professionals.
Our multidisciplinary team manages a wide range of neurosurgical conditions using modern diagnostic and surgical techniques to ensure safe and effective treatment.
The Neurosurgery Unit provides diagnosis, surgical treatment, and follow-up care for:
- Traumatic brain and spinal injuries
- Brain tumors and spinal tumors
- Congenital brain and spinal disorders
- Hydrocephalus and shunt procedures
- Degenerative spine diseases (disc herniation, spinal stenosis)
- Intracranial hemorrhage and vascular disorders
- Infections of the brain and spine
- Peripheral nerve disorders
Both emergency and elective neurosurgical procedures are performed, with comprehensive preoperative, operative, and postoperative care.
Training and Research
The Neurosurgery Unit plays an active role in teaching medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals. The department is also engaged in clinical research aimed at improving neurosurgical care and patient outcomes.

Outpatient Services: As scheduled by appointment
Inpatient and Emergency Services: Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
