Overview

The Research Directorate at CHUK leads and coordinates high-quality, ethical, and impactful research, fostering innovation and strengthening clinical practice through collaboration, capacity building, and evidence-based knowledge generation.

The Research Directorate, established in 2016 within the Division of Clinical Education and Research at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), is dedicated to positioning CHUK as a research-led hospital. The Directorate operates under the coordination of the Director, who reports directly to the Head of the Division.

CHUK is committed to fostering a research environment that upholds the highest standards of professional conduct while promoting ethical, competent, safe, and accountable research practices. Through high-quality research, the institution also contributes to the development of excellent educational resources and improved clinical outcomes.

Mandate

The Research Directorate is responsible for supporting and promoting all research activities aimed at advancing medical knowledge and enhancing clinical practice. Its core functions include:

  • Coordinating research activities across the hospital
  • Receiving, reviewing, and approving research proposals
  • Managing and monitoring internally funded research projects
  • Supporting staff in accessing external research funding
  • Organizing research conferences and training programs
  • Providing guidance in research proposal development and implementation

The Directorate is supported by a Research Commission team with expertise in clinical and administrative data, offering comprehensive support in the planning, execution, and analysis of research projects.

Key Objectives

The Directorate aims to:

  1. Promote the development of high-quality research proposals and outputs
  2. Design and deliver research projects, consultancy services, and policy briefs aligned with CHUK’s strategic goals
  3. Identify priority research areas relevant to institutional development
  4. Provide expert support in proposal writing, budgeting, and funding compliance
  5. Ensure equitable access to internal research funding opportunities
  6. Increase research publications by staff and students
  7. Foster national and international research collaborations
  8. Encourage staff participation in external funding opportunities
  9. Ensure compliance with ethical standards in all research activities
  10. Attract and manage internal and external research funding
  11. Maintain and report a comprehensive database of research activities within CHUK
